On December 26th, Guatemala signed the Peace Agreement to finally end the 32 year civil war and gain the chance to open up to new opportunities. The civil was in Guatemala left between 150.000 and 200.000 civilians death and/or disappeared.

It was a terrorist attack in Atlanta Georgia, in the Centennial Olympic Park where there was just 1 fatal victim and 111 injured. A security guard found the bomb before its detonation and he could clear most of the spectators out of the park. The responsible for the attack was Eric Robert Rudolph who wanted to force the cancellation of the Olympics.

On January 10th, 812 Palestinians prisoners were freed in the West Bank and Gaza, 10 days before the Palestinian National Elections. The Israeli Army announced that there would be workers returning to their jobs. The radical Organization Hamas and Ya sir Arafat accused the Israeli agents of killing their people, but Israel declined neither confirm nor denied the accusation.

Bjarne Riss from Denmark won the Tour of France. He was the captain of the Telekom team. His victory brought a positive impact on the development of cycling in Denmark and also in Germany.
